HS codes on an FCL PI — who classifies, and what to write
The buyer’s broker still classifies. The factory PI should name a working heading, material, and use — not a lucky six-digit copied from a competitor’s listing.
What belongs on the PI
Write: commercial name, material, intended use, packing, and a proposed HS at 6 digits plus national tails if the dest broker already confirmed them. For furniture say wood species and foam density. For lights say voltage, driver brand, and whether the SKU is a luminaire or a part. A screenshot of “HS 9401” is not a classification.
Into China vs out of China
Outbound from Nansha or Ningbo still needs a Chinese customs heading for the export declaration. Inbound to Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, or Shekou needs the PRC import heading, tariff, and VAT. Do not reuse the export code as the import code without a broker. This page does not classify your SKU.
What search should index
Ask a real question: “HS for hotel banquet chairs foam 40D FOB Nansha to Jebel Ali”. That is a lane note. A generic “what is HS code” essay is already owned by encyclopedias.
